Accused toilet spying doc Ryan Cho intending to plead guilty, court told
A junior doctor accused of secretly recording hundreds of hospital staff using the toilet has told the court he intends to plead guilty.
Ryan Cho, 29, was charged with more than 900 felonies last year after Austin Hospital staff found a cellphone record in an employee restroom.
It was claimed that the police found thousands of private images, cataloged by name and hospital name, for the years between 2021 and 2025 on the electronic devices seized from his home.
These included alleged victims at Austin Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Center and Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Police previously claimed in court that hundreds of people were filmed in the toilet or shower.
As Mr Cho, who covered his face with a mask, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday afternoon, magistrate Michelle Mykytowycz was told he was expected to plead guilty to a lesser charge.
“The matter has been resolved up to the admission of guilt, how the charges will be handled (this issue is still under discussion),” he said.
The court was told prosecutors would contact the alleged victims to inform them of the plan.
Mr. Cho’s lawyer, Kristina Kothrakis, said discussions were ongoing with the prosecution about which charges would remain in the plea.
The court was told he would return to court on July 9 when he is expected to plead guilty and the case will be referred to the District Court.
