Actress Amanda Seyfried called socialism a “fabulous idea” during a podcast on Friday and said the word means “taking care of each other.”

During a conversation in Variety “Awards Circuit” podcastSeyfried talked about what the word socialism meant to her as she and host Michael Schneider lamented the state of the country. The duo acknowledged they did not want to leave the United States following controversy over their role in “The Testament of Ann Lee,” a musical about Ann Lee, the founder of the Shakers religious movement.

“We put ourselves out there, and then I keep thinking, thank God we talk about Ann Lee so much because there’s a direct correlation between what she created and what we’re missing,” Seyfried said during the podcast. “What if we don’t all have an agenda? What if our agenda is to take care of each other? Socialism is a great idea, and I know it doesn’t work perfectly.”

People also don’t know what the word actually means, Schneider said.

Schneider later brought up 9/11 during the discussion and said there was a sense of unity in its aftermath, with everyone supporting each other.

Seyfried agreed and added, “Everyone left everything for each other. People sacrificed their lives in this world without even thinking.”

“And it doesn’t take a meteor to hit or a house to burn down to give up everything for each other. That’s just how we are as human beings,” he added.
