Additional US tariffs on Indian goods since April 2025: Here’s the full timeline

Before 2 April 2025: MFN (most preferred nation) tariffs only. These are standard import duties that apply on a non-discriminatory basis to goods from all trading partners.
April 2 – August 6, 2025: 26 percent (10 percent basic tariff and 16 percent reciprocal tariff). This was beyond MFN duties.
April 9, 2025: US suspends tariffs for 90 days (until July 9, 2025).

July 31, 2025: The United States announced a 25 percent tax, effective August 7, 2025.
August 6, 2025: An additional customs duty of 25 percent was imposed on Indian goods for the purchase of Russian oil. Valid from August 27 to August 7, 2025 to August 26, 2025: Reciprocal tariffs of 25 percent above MFN duties.
27 August 2025 – 6 February 2026: 50 percent customs duty on Indian goods
February 7 – February 23, 2026: Russia-related 25 percent tariffs were withdrawn. In the India-US joint statement, it was stated that Washington intends to reduce customs duties from 25 percent to 18 percent. However, the discount was not applied.
February 20, 2026: US Supreme Court strikes down reciprocal tariffs
Starting February 24, 2026: The United States announces a 10 percent tariff for 150 days. There is no clarity after this.

May 7, 2026: US federal court lifts 10 percent tariff. But the ruling applied directly to only three of the plaintiffs, Washington state, and two businesses, spice company Burlap & Barrel and toy company Basic Fun. The US administration is expected to appeal Thursday’s decision.
However, there is no change in the sectoral tariffs applied in accordance with Article 232. 50 percent in steel, aluminum and copper; 25 percent on certain auto components and 100 percent on patented drugs for all U.S. trading partners.
