Geelong star Ollie Dempsey says his faith-based approach to life, promoted by AFL great Gary Ablett jnr, has allowed him to escape the pressures of being an elite footballer while dominating the field in a new role copied by rival clubs.

Dempsey, 23, said Ablett’s mentorship, whether through their shared Christian faith or discussing football, played a central role in his personal growth as a down-to-earth and happy man who also became arguably the most dominant winger in the competition.

His ability to shrug off the typically volatile emotions of life as a professional footballer has helped the former star junior basketball player and state representative be named the AFL’s Rising Star in 2024 and play a key role in the Cats’ progress to the 2025 grand final. That superb form has continued this year, heading into tonight’s blockbuster match against Fremantle in Perth.
