In summary: If Hawthorn want to brand themselves as premiership contenders they need to win tonight. They sit in fifth place (8-4-1) but are still a long way off Fremantle and Sydney. The Suns have had a hell of a month, losing back-to-back games against North Melbourne, Brisbane Lions and Geelong while also getting a bye. Moreover, there are speculations about players’ unrest in the camp. Damien Hardwick knows better than anyone that there are few better ways to solve a perceived culture problem than to win. The Suns are ninth (7-6) and need a win. A fourth consecutive defeat will see them mired in mediocrity.
History says: Hawthorn have a 50 per cent winning record on the Gold Coast, but don’t let that statistic fool you – they have lost their last four games at the venue in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. These two teams last met in Launceston in April this year and Hawthorn won by 49 points. But once again this can be misleading; Tassie is a distinct home advantage for the Hawks. The Suns are still trying to get out of the cold.
On the selection table: Key defenseman Tom Barrass (hamstring) is a big candidate for the Hawks, making his first appearance since the 10th round. It will be interesting to see if he takes the time to adjust. Hawthorn also promoted Harry Morrison while letting go of Flynn Perez and Bodie Ryan. They are still without key forward Jack Gunston, which leaves a huge gap in defence. Gold Coast turned to big man Jarrod Witts and Nick Holman for his 150th cap and Suns Academy product Beau Addinsall for his AFL debut. They sacked Ben Jepson, Lachie Gulbin and Charlie Ballard after a poor performance against Geelong in the GMHBA last week.
Joining the squad will be club stalwarts Nick Holman, who will be playing his 150th AFL match, and Jarrod Witts, who returns after missing last week’s game against the Cats.
