Michael Voss arrived armed, protected, and at times visibly agitated. When he left, he gave one of the most combative press conferences of his coaching tenure; A robust defense of Carlton’s handling of Elijah Hollands and a scathing rebuke of the media scrutiny surrounding the club.
The Carlton coach set the tone early and repeatedly warned that he would shut down the press conference if the questioning strayed into what he considered disrespectful territory. It wasn’t an empty threat. Voss stopped mid-answer many times, challenged the basic idea of the questions, and made it clear that there were limits he would not allow to be crossed.
At the center of it all was young midfielder Hollands, whose case sparked a club and AFL review and a wider debate about mental health, duty of care and matchday responsibility. Before the press conference began, the Blues warned the media that Voss would not answer specific questions about what happened last Thursday night while the vetting process was ongoing.
But Voss stressed one point: Carlton had not failed the player, he said.
