After decades of division, can this European country finally find peace?

Two sides of Europe’s longest disagreements have expressed their optimism about the new talks that will begin on Wednesday.

In New York, headed by UN Secretary General António Guterres, unofficial talks will begin and is one of the guarantor forces for the Mediterranean island of England.

Unrecognized Turkish Turkey’s Northern Cyprus in the Republic of Northern Cyprus, the Cypriots promise a “new approach ında in the negotiations, while the Cyprus government in the South, says that they entered the talks with a“ positive spirit ..

Negotiations will also be included in the UK as one of the old guarantor forces of Keir Starmer, hoping to be the last of the international agreements.

Following a series of successes on the international stage, including Brexit reset and trade agreements with the US and India, the Prime Minister is now trying to end the 51 -year -old part on the island of Cyprus.

Unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (Trnc) President Ersin Tatar’s visit to England in late June after asking Boris Johnson for help.

Mr. Tatar met with the former Prime Minister after he met with England Minister Stephen Doughty for the first time at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FCDO), who will lead the UK during his New York talks.

Mr. Johnson, a Turkish heritage, became the British Foreign Minister during the last official talks on the island in 2015-2017.

Turkish and Greek Cypriots still do not come out during the division of their islands for decades.

Supported by Türkiye’s President Recep Erdoğan, President Tatar has been pushing to equal recognition with the divided island in practice and a two -state solution since 1974. However, the recognized Cypriot government is still having difficulty for a federal solution to re -unite the candidate.

However, Tatar said he agreed to seek a new way to solve disputes by using negotiations to find mutual cooperation on issues that benefit both sides.

He said: “Our new approach is that the two sides cooperate on various issues such as energy, water, new economic opportunities, especially cleaning the land in the buffer region, and even repairing the old cemeteries on both sides.

“We want to invest in solar energy, a lot of land sitting there for nothing, we want to invest in renewable energy. Thus, we can use a lot of investment to produce energy and share for our common good with Greek Cypriots.”

He also thinks that the island will benefit from a new cable from Türkiye, which is only 60 km away from Cyprus. This issue became more complex in terms of disputes with oil and gas reserves close to the island.

Meanwhile, Spyros Miltiades, Deputy Cyprus Deputy Commissioner in London, said to Independent: “The new meeting in the Republic of Cyprus in New York hopes to see that things are moving with a positive spirit.

“Our position is that in New York, in 2017 in Crans Montana, we must have controversy for the results that will start directly negotiating within the framework of the UN for a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem.

“The only negotiations accepted by the Republic of Cyprus and the rest of the international community is the framework of the easement bicomunal federation agreed on the UN.”

“We hope that all parties will attend the goodwill meeting and will be ready to participate in a meaningful dialogue that will approach the reunion of the island. After all these decades, we have reached the convergence of most of the Cyprus problem that can be reached.”

Tatar’s meeting with Mr. Doughty in June was the first meeting between a TRNC representative and the United Kingdom of the United Kingdom of the United Kingdom. It seems that the minister refuses to take a picture with Tatar in his office, which is the sensitivity around the Cyprus problem.

A FCDO source said: “As the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, Mr. Doughty came together to discuss the ongoing efforts to reach the Cyprus settlement, as he approached the next leadership between the parties and the guarantor forces in July.

Trnc leader had previously asked former Boris Johnson for help.

In early May, the UN Secretary General announced that María Angela Holguín Cuéllar was appointed as the personal ambassador over Cyprus, which was tasked with re -transferring with parties to work on the following steps. The appointment was welcomed by both parties.

It is the former colonial force, which has two military bases on Cyprus, with the guarantor force with Greece and Türkiye.

The island was divided because the Turkish army intervened in 1974 after a Greek-Cypriot military coup that caused an ethnic conflict. Türkiye’s army has been in the north since then, the Turkish Cypriots see them as defense force and as the Greek Cypriots supported by the international community, as an occupier. Trnc declared that it was an independent state in 1983, but was not recognized outside Türkiye.

Türkiye Cypriots argue that the chapter began in 1963 with the collapse of the ethnic power sharing arrangement after attacks on the Turkish Cypriot community just three years after independence from England.

In 2004, the Annan plan in the United Nations almost re -merged, but although he voted in favor of the Turkish Cypriots, he was rejected by the Greek Cypriots in a referendum in the South at the last minute.

This was allowed to allow Cyprus to allow critics to be a member of the EU former Foreign Minister Jack Straw.
