After disappointing 1st ODI, Varun Aaron advises Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma to take inspiration from THIS Indian cricketer

After a disappointing performance in the first ODI against Australia, former India pacer Varun Aaron suggested that senior stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should follow the example of an Indian cricketer making a successful adjustment late in his career.
India’s leading batsmen Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are now being asked to emulate MS Dhoni’s approach after their poor performances in the return matches. After a seven-month break from international cricket, both Kohli and Rohit struggled to make an impact in the series opener against Australia, managing scores of just 8 and 0 runs.
In light of their impressive performances, former India bowler Varun Aaron emphasized the importance of consistent play to stay engaged in the sport, especially now that they are single-format players. He stated that MS Dhoni participated in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy after retiring from Test cricket to ensure that he was match-ready.
“Play domestic cricket. Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy starts in November and then Vijay Hazare Trophy starts in December. That’s the best way to stay in touch with the game. I remember when MS Dhoni retired from Test cricket, he played a few Syed mushak Ali and Vijay Hazare Award. This is a great way to stay in touch. I’m sure both the batsmen will look at it. You don’t play in two formats anymore. They will need match practice,” Aaron told Star Sports.
After retiring from the longest format, Dhoni also played for Jharkhand in a domestic tournament. He participated in seven matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2015-16 and then featured in eight matches in the following season.
Aakash Chopra stated that it will be difficult for both Rohit and Kohli to regain their form as they are now single-format players only. He added that Rohit should focus on increasing his runs.
“It’s a tough situation, actually. We were talking about how difficult it is to field when you’re a single-format player. They’re not in familiar territory. Also, a good shot, a loose shot and then a good ball. That’s how life unfolds for an opening batsman. I thought he would focus a lot more on quantity in this new role, not as a captain but just as a primary batsman. The quality is always there; we saw how he shifted gears. It’s a different brand.” He started playing cricket. “Now we need to look at the amount of runs,” he said.
This year, both Kohli and Rohit participated in domestic cricket competitions after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, representing their respective teams Mumbai and Delhi. With the white-ball season on the horizon, it will be interesting to observe whether the Indian team will feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, especially since they are scheduled to play in several ODIs ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
