Delhi police registered a case after an 18-year-old student of South Asian University (SAU) alleged that she was sexually assaulted by four men on the campus on Sunday evening. Investigators said they are yet to identify the four defendants named in the victim’s complaint and have formed teams to capture them. According to a report by Hindustan Times, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP, South Delhi) Ankit Chauhan said that a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged based on the statement of the survivor. SAU is an international university located in the Maidan Garhi area of south Delhi.
Student was blackmailed days before the attack
The victim, a first-year Bachelor of Technology (BTech) student, alleged in her complaint that she received threatening emails from an unknown sender a few days before the incident. The situation escalated further on Sunday when she was sent suggestive photos of herself created using her picture displayed on social media. The survivor also claimed that threats were made that the photos would be distributed among university students. Later in the day, four identified men forcibly took her to an empty room on campus and sexually assaulted her.
Survivor claims manager attempted cover-up
In his complaint, the victim detailed the university administration’s attempts to cover up the crime. He said the hostel responsible rejected his account and instead leveled the allegations against female students. The person responsible also allegedly advised the victim to “take a bath and change her clothes.” The student also alleged that university officials prevented him from contacting his mother and physically prevented him from showing his injuries to his family via video call. “Management did not take me seriously and did not allow anyone from the outside to get involved,” he said in his complaint.
The incident comes days after the rape case in Bengal
A friend of the survivor contacted the police on Monday, following which the student underwent a medical examination at the government-run Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital. Police recorded the survivor’s official statement early on Tuesday. The police case was filed on charges including kidnapping and gang rape under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The incident took place a few days after a private medical college student was allegedly raped by a male classmate near the institute in West Bengal’s Durgapur.
