After third assassination attempt, debate grows over whether Trump attack warrants another investigation

Unlike the first attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump, Republicans are in no rush to hold public hearings and launch an investigation into the latest assassination attempt on Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner over the weekend.

Top lawmakers on the House Oversight and Senate Judiciary committees met with Secret Service Director Sean Curran for briefings this week, but have so far refrained from calling for hearings or full-scale investigations.
Two years ago, when a gunman tried and failed to assassinate Trump during the campaign in Butler, Pennsylvania, two major bipartisan investigations were launched to address the failures of the Secret Service and other agencies and to uncover how a gunman came so close to ending Trump’s life.
And in the case of Ryan Routh, who was caught with a rifle in another attempt at Trump while playing golf at his Florida club just months after the attack on Butler, lawmakers joined that investigation into the ongoing investigation into the initial attack.

“So this is the third attempt on the president’s life in two years,” Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., told Fox News Digital. “You know, we need to look carefully at all the procedures and protocols.”
Hawley seeks Chairman of Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Rand Paul, R-Ky., will hold a hearing on presidential security following the shooting.
The same committee conducted an investigation into the Butler initiative and determined that: The shooting was preventable and why it happened due to a series of failures in safety protocol, planning and financing, among others.
The bipartisan investigation yielded more than 40 recommendations for actions that should be taken to prevent future recurrence.
Paul did not seem ready to attend a rushed hearing on the matter. He told Fox News Digital that lawmakers have been investigating this initiative for more than a year and believe the investigation “has yielded some wisdom, insights and recommendations.”
“I think there will be elements of this that need to be reviewed and improved,” Paul said. “We’ll get a briefing from the Secret Service on what we can learn from this initiative and then decide whether we need to do anything more. But certainly the Secret Service needs to investigate and see what they can do to make the president safer.”
