AI is reducing hours of work to minutes. Some employees say they’re just as busy.

Ask a question technology worker How AI has changed their business and how they will likely answer: Single number: recorded time.

In interviews with Business Insider, Big Tech Software engineers, product managers, and data scientists have talked about using AI to compress hours of work into minutes. They use it to draft documents, summarize months of meetings, review code, automate reports, and more.

But faster doesn’t always mean easier. An Amazon data scientist said that artificial intelligence has added hours to his work week while creating automation systems that will save him time. Another Amazon employee said the time saved was quickly redirected to the next project.

Six technology workers said that artificial intelligence saved them the most time. (Answers have been edited for length and clarity.)

The time that artificial intelligence saves me is re-spent on the next problem

Priyanka Devi Ramesh is a business intelligence engineer at Amazon. He is 30 years old and lives in Virginia.

Document writing is the area where AI is having the biggest impact. With the help of a Artificial intelligence tool called PippinIt became easier to translate my thoughts about the projects I was working on into polished technical or client-facing documents. This saves a huge amount of time; I spend a maximum of 15 to 20 minutes writing and finalizing a document that would previously take over an hour.

Technically, I use Kiro and Amazon Quick. Kiro is great for brainstorming and logic updates in minutes. I create agents within Amazon Quick to automate customers’ frequently asked questions about dashboards and uncover insights from data.

Artificial intelligence did not shorten my working time. We are constantly looking for ways to clean up messy data and find opportunities to automate wherever possible; so time saved in one area is reinvested in the next problem.

AI helps me make sense of months-long meetings at Google

Prerit Pathak is a security engineer at Google. He is 27 years old and lives in New York.

I use Gemini for a variety of purposes, but lately it has supercharged my note-taking.

I work longer hours now so AI can save me time later

Sarthak Gupta is a data scientist at Amazon. He is 29 years old and lives in Seattle.

AI has been most helpful in creating end-to-end automation pipelines for repetitive workflows.

Creating a monthly stakeholder report, which included pulling data, cleaning it, creating visualizations, and writing the summary, took 8 to 10 hours over several days. An artificial intelligence channel now manages data extraction, transformation and dashboard refresh. I spend about 45 minutes reviewing the output and adding context before sending it off.

However, my overall working hours are currently longer than usual. This is because we are in the middle of the automation phase. Building pipelines, integrating AI tools, validating outputs, and incorporating all of this into existing workflows is front-loaded work, and that upfront investment is real. The payoff then comes when the same task that took several days becomes a click of a button.

So in the short term, artificial intelligence actually adds hours to my week, not decreases them. I expect this to reverse once the underlying pipelines are stable and automation does the heavy lifting on its own.

AI helps me turn messy ideas into polished plans

Tanvi Pisal is a UX designer who works as a contractor for Apple through Red Oak Technologies. He is 29 years old and lives in San Jose.

As a product designer, I would spend hours drafting product requirements documents, brainstorming user stories, mapping edge cases, outlining use cases, and developing ideas before moving on to visual design.

Now I can start with rough notes or a complex outline, and AI helps turn it into a much more structured document in minutes. The process, which used to take me three to four hours, can often be reduced to 30 minutes with feedback and improvements.

AI gets me to the starting line faster at Amazon

Udit Mehrotra is a product manager at Amazon. He is in his 30s and lives in Seattle.

Where I saw the biggest change was in writing product documentation. Every major Startup at Amazon It starts with a written document, and for years the first hour or two of this process was scaffolding: setting up the structure, filling in the sections you know by heart, and building something worth reacting to before moving on to real thought.

I can now use AI to input the customer problem and constraints and get a solid first draft in minutes. What surprises me is that it is often more comprehensive than what I write on my own under time pressure.

Real work still needs to go from 80% to 100%, and AI isn’t changing that. Strategic judgment, tradeoffs between what customers need and what is technically possible, decisions that require years of accumulated context about a particular customer problem; that thinking still requires the same depth and care as always.

What changed was that I got to the starting line faster with a more complete structure to react and counter. As a result, the quality of the final document is usually better, not because the AI ​​is thinking deeply, but because I devoted more of my time to it.

The process that used to take a week now takes a day

Iren Azra Zou is a software engineer at trucking logistics company Double Nickel. He is in his 20s and lives in New Jersey.

I mostly use AI Claude Codefor the majority of my coding. Time savings are really hard to measure; It feels like a job that used to take a week can now take a day.

We also trust very much Artificial intelligence to examine and provide feedback on the code unless the change is particularly risky. This alone saves a huge amount of time. Instead of waiting days for real human reviews, you get tons of feedback within hours. This also means I spend less time reviewing other people’s code, which probably saves me a few hours each week.

There are trade-offs; fewer human reviews may have disadvantages. But right now, the speed of iteration and innovation is incredibly valuable to us.
