Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey is hospitalized after a minor procedure, her office says

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Governor. Kay Ivey He was hospitalized Tuesday after undergoing what his office described as a minor procedure to remove fluid pressing on his lungs.

Ivey spokeswoman Gina Maiola said in a statement that the 81-year-old Republican governor will remain under observation at Baptist Medical Center in South Montgomery “in the coming days.”

The fluid was discovered after Ivey went to her doctor because she was feeling discomfort on her left side and had recently experienced shortness of breath.

“Although it is not an emergency, Governor Ivey requested that the procedure be done as quickly as possible so that we can quickly return the 2026 Regular Session to 100%,” Maiola said. The legislative period is in its final days.

His office did not say how long the governor will be hospitalized or recover.

“We have been in contact with Governor Ivey, and she says she is committed to a very rapid and complete recovery.” Maiola said.

Ivey announced that she was exposed to radiation in 2019 for lung cancer. The governor described it as a small, local spot. His office said in 2020 that scans showed the treatment was successful and that he free from disease.
