Alabama is one step closer to appointing its Republican successor, Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala.

But given that Tuberville’s decision to run for governor and vacate his Senate seat has sparked a crowded race to replace him, we are still weeks away from determining which candidate will come out on top. And in Alabama, if a candidate doesn’t get a majority of the votes, there’s a runoff.

Among the Republican candidates is Rep. Barry Moore, R-Ala. and former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson emerged from the seven-way conflict. They will face each other again on June 16.

This will also be another test of President Donald Trump’s strength of support in Alabama, where his track record is not 100%.

Moore, who announced his candidacy to Fox News Digital last year, has Trump’s support. It’s a support he re-enforced during a recent tele-rally calling for support for the three-term member of the House of Representatives.

“He is a true First Patriot of America who has been with me from the very beginning,” Trump said during the rally.

Moore, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus and a self-styled fiscal hawk, has a long history of supporting Trump. Indeed, he was the first elected official in the country to support Trump during his first run in 2015.

“I think my number one duty is to protect the freedom of the people and to support the president in that process,” Moore told Fox News Digital last year. “And this is an opportunity for us to continue to fight for the America First agenda, but also to make sure that we have conservatives in the Alabama Senate who are truly the voice of the people.”

Hudson finished a narrow second-place finish against Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall in a race that wasn’t finalized until several hours after polls closed.

Marshall had stronger name recognition entering the race and had served as the Yellowhammer State’s top law enforcement officer since 2017.

And most recently, a federal court in Alabama caused a stir after requiring the Supreme Court to comply with the recent redistricting decision in Louisiana and allow the state’s maps drawn during the 2020 cycle to be used on primary election day.

However, this was not enough to defeat either Moore or Hudson. And next month, the winner of that contest will face Everett Wess and Dakarai Lariett, who are similarly headed for a runoff race.
