According to Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) sources, a new sports city will be developed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JLN) in New Delhi, with Australia and Qatar serving as key references for the project. A delegation from the Ministry of Sports of India had visited these countries to examine their sports infrastructure and collect ideas for the development of the JLN sports city. India has formally submitted its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games to the Commonwealth Sports Review Committee in London.

The 102-acre site will cater to all major disciplines and include an accommodation facility for athletes, a source in the sports ministry said on Monday. If the plan works, the stadium will be completely rebuilt, but at the moment the plan is just a proposal and so the timeline for the project has not yet been determined. “The stadium will be dismantled. All offices inside the stadium, including the National Anti-Doping Agency and the National Dope Testing Laboratory, will be moved,” the ministry source said.

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was built in 1982 to host the 9th Asian Games and was later upgraded with state-of-the-art facilities to host the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is currently maintained and used by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) on behalf of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, as part of its legacy of promoting and developing sports activities and implementing plans and programs for the promotion of sports. It is one of the most famous and popular stadiums in India. It witnessed many important sporting events.

Last month the JLN stadium hosted the World Para Athletics Championships, where more than 2,200 participants from more than 100 countries competed in 186 medal events. Hosting for the first time, the team broke a record with 22 medals, including 6 Gold, 9 Silver and 7 Bronze, with their best performance to date.

India became the fourth Asian country to host the World Para Athletics Championships after Qatar, UAE and Japan. In previous world championships, India won nine medals in the 2019 Dubai edition, 10 in the 2023 Paris edition and 17 in the 2024 Kobe edition.
