Trump Pulls US Out Of 31 UN-Linked Organizations, Including Climate Convention | World News

In a sweeping ideologically driven move targeting the UN, President Donald Trump is withdrawing the United States from 31 organizations affiliated with him, claiming they “no longer serve American interests.”
Trump on Wednesday barred U.S. departments and agencies from participating in or funding those organizations and 35 non-UN organizations.
The White House said they “act contrary to U.S. national interests, security, economic prosperity, or sovereignty” and “advance global agendas above U.S. priorities.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said these organizations “actively seek to constrain US sovereignty, and their work is carried out by the same elite networks” that he derisively calls the “multilateral NGO complex.”‘
“We seek cooperation where it serves our people, and we will stand firm where it does not,” added Rubio, who implemented the “America First” policy that Trump campaigned on.
Many of the organizations on the list work in areas that run counter to the president’s ideology, such as climate change, gender and population, as well as in trade and economics.
These include the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Trade Centre, the UN Framework Conference on Climate Change, the UN Population Fund and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, economic and social commissions for Asia and other regions, and the Agency for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
While some, such as UNCTAD and the Population Fund, receive direct contributions, most of those on the target list are financed from the UN’s regular budget, where Washington’s mandatory share is 22 percent.
Trump did not disclose the $820 million U.S. contribution for 2025 approved by Congress, and his administration has proposed reducing the U.S. contribution by $610 million this year.
Describing climate change as a “hoax” and highlighting coal and oil energy sources that emit greenhouse gases, Trump, in one of his first actions since his re-election, withdrew the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement on controlling global warming reached through UNFCC negotiations.
Explaining the ideological rationale, Rubio said, “What began as a pragmatic framework of international organizations aimed at peace and cooperation has evolved into a sprawling global governance architecture often dominated by progressive ideology and disconnected from national interests.”
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres did not immediately react to the Trump administration’s withdrawal from organizations and institutions.
Wednesday’s actions were the latest in Trump’s campaign against UN-affiliated organizations.
He had previously ordered the removal of the US from the cultural, educational and scientific agency UNESCO, the Palestinian aid agency UNRWA and the UN Human Rights Council.
Other UN agencies targeted include the offices of the secretary-general’s special representatives dealing with children in armed conflict, violence against children and sexual violence in armed conflict.
Non-UN organizations on the chopping block include the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, the Global Counterterrorism Forum, the Global Cyber Expertise Forum, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, and the International Solar Alliance.
