Alex de Minaur takes on Roman Andres Burruchaga in first round; Swiatek, Zverev, Kokkinakis, Fritz, Rybakina, Svitolina, Shelton also in action
London: The country breathed a sigh of relief as Burruchaga hit a backhand shot to give de Minaur a tight first set, 7-6 (7-5).
After watching fiancée Katie Boulter lose on court three, de Minaur’s Argentinian opponent played a superb opening set, including a 3-0 lead.
I felt the Demon didn’t offer enough variety early in the game, but he tried to get back into the game with some more passing and off-tempo balls.
Even then Burruchaga’s level never seriously dropped and there was real concern that the Demon might suffer defeat when they lost the mini-break in the tiebreaker.
But Burruchaga made consecutive errors, including a double fault, to give up his advantage. We’ll see if Demon can make an early statement in the second set.
