All about Russian President’s armoured limousine Aurus Senat that can survive bullets, missiles

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India on a two-day visit in his armored Aurus Senat, a luxury limousine designed for maximum protection. The vehicle has bulletproof construction, resistance to chemical attacks and high-tech interiors.

Russian President Vladimir Putin landed in India today for his first visit in four years and brought with him the Aurus Senat, one of the world’s most secret and heavily guarded vehicles. His visit will include high-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a state banquet and discussions strengthening the India-Russia ‘special and privileged strategic partnership’.

Aurus Senate: Russia’s Mobile Presidential Fortress

The Aurus Senat is Russia’s bespoke luxury limousine and is often referred to as the ‘Russian Rolls-Royce’. Designed for presidential and state use, this vehicle combines armored protection with the latest technology and superior comfort. The vehicle replaces Putin’s previous Mercedes-Benz S 600 Guard Pullman as part of Moscow’s Kortezh project, which develops fully armored, domestically produced official vehicles.

Launched during Putin’s inauguration in 2018, Senat is produced by Aurus Motors in cooperation with Russia’s NAMI institute Sollers JSC and the UAE’s Tawazun Holding. Mass production started in Yelabuga in 2021. The limousine has been featured in high-profile diplomatic moments, including its gift to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in 2024. A limited civilian edition is available, limited to approximately 120 copies per year.

Why Is the Aurus Senate Nearly Impregnable?

Aurus Senat is designed to withstand extreme threats. Key protective features include:

  • Bulletproof structure that can stop high-caliber and armor-piercing bullets.
  • Resistant to missile and drone attacks with reinforced layers to withstand explosions.
  • Buoyancy: The car can float when submerged in water, allowing for a safe escape.
  • Run-flat tires provide mobility even if all tires are destroyed.
  • Protection against chemical attack through an independent air filtration system.
  • High performance: Powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine, this vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6-9 seconds and has a top speed of 160 km/h.
  • Luxury interior: leather upholstery, handcrafted wood panels, climate control and secure communication systems.

The basic model costs around 18 million rubles (Rs 2.5 crore), while Putin’s fully armored, customized version with hidden security systems is almost double that price. These state-level versions are not publicly available.

Previous Journey of Putin and Modi

After the SCO Summit in China in September, Prime Minister Modi and Putin went on a joint tour of the Aurus Senate. The two leaders reportedly chatted for about an hour, underlining the car’s role as not only a safe means of transportation but also a space for confidential diplomatic dialogue.

As Putin begins his two-day visit to India, the Aurus Senate will remain a central feature of his security detail, symbolizing both luxury and impregnable protection.
