Amazon laying off about 14,000 corporate workers

Amazon It said Tuesday it would lay off about 14,000 corporate employees, marking the latest setbacks in the company’s years-long efforts to rein in costs.

Inside a blog postThe company wrote that the layoffs were carried out to help make the company leaner and less bureaucratic and that it was looking to invest in “our biggest bets,” including productive artificial intelligence.

“This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the internet, enabling companies to innovate faster than ever before—in existing market segments and entirely new market segments,” wrote Beth Galetti, senior vice president of human experience and technology at Amazon. “We believe we need to organize in a leaner way, with fewer layers and more ownership, to move as quickly as possible for our customers and businesses.”

The layoffs are expected to be the largest corporate layoffs in Amazon history, CNBC previously reported. Reuters reported The cuts could affect as many as 30,000 employees, according to people familiar with the matter.
