Milan tram derails and slams into a building, killing one person
MILAN, Italy (AP) — A tram derailed and crashed into a building in the heart of Milan on Friday, killing one person and injuring more than two dozen people, authorities and Italian media said.
The incident, which took place on central Vittorio Veneto street, occurred during the transition period between hosting the Winter Olympics and Paralympics, when the Italian commercial capital hosts seasonal fashion shows.
Tram number 9 passes through the heart of Italy’s financial capital. He was supposed to continue straight along Vittorio Veneto and was traveling at high speed. But according to video of the accident published by Sky TG24, it suddenly veered onto a switch line used by another tram line and veered off its normal route.
In the video, it can be seen that the tram almost turned sideways while taking the bend and came to a halt.
LaPresse news agency quoted Lombardy welfare assessor Guido Bertolaso as saying one person had died and one of the injured was in critical condition. While dozens of ambulances, fire trucks and police cars responded to the accident, the teams accompanied the passengers away from the scene with thermal blankets.
Milan public transport company ATM said one person was killed. In the statement made by LaPresse, it was stated that they were cooperating with prosecutors “to definitively determine the cause and dynamics of the incident.”
