Ravichandran Ashwin to join BBL after going unsold in ILT20 auction? Veteran spinner decides future path

The 38-year-old, one of India’s most successful Test cricketers, registered for the ILT20 auction earlier this month but surprisingly failed to find a buyer during the bidding process.
India’s famous off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is set to participate in the entire Big Bash League season with Sydney Thunder. This development turns previous discussions of a January-only month into a full-season commitment that includes finals. The 39-year-old will bring a cultural impact and strategic surprise to Trevor Bayliss’ side.
This move follows Ashwin’s unsold status in the ILT20 auction, where his base price was $120,000. Rather than lowering his asking price, he accepted this outcome. What started as a missed opportunity in the UAE has now turned into a major chapter in Australia, creating a fascinating narrative for BBL 15.
Ravichandran Ashwin created history by becoming the first capped Indian male player to participate in the BBL. This opportunity arose after he announced his retirement from international cricket and IPL, thereby lifting the BCCI’s restrictions on active, contracted players participating in overseas leagues. For the Thunder, that means adding a player with high quality and crowd-drawing potential.
Sydney Thunder’s director of cricket, Trent Copeland, said: “Bringing him in for the entire tournament was a no-brainer. We are delighted to bring in an icon of the game, a leader and a world-class player who will inspire a new wave of fans to join Thunder Nation.”
Ashwin’s schedule currently revolves around the BBL; His expected debut will be against the Hurricanes in Hobart on December 16, followed by his home debut in the Sydney Smash at Engie Stadium on December 20.
There is also an element of electoral strategy. The Thunder currently have Chris Green and Tanveer Sangha among their returning options, and there is a possibility of adding more players during the draft. With fast bowlers like George Garton, Lockie Ferguson, Wes Agar and Daniel sams Meanwhile, only three foreign players can be included in the playing XI on any given night. This creates a tactical chessboard that Trevor Bayliss would enjoy. Identifying the right combination of Ashwin in the squad will be a fascinating challenge for the management.
For a league looking for star power and a star looking to navigate the global T20 landscape, this arrangement presents a mutually beneficial scenario.
