American Actor-Director Maggie Gyllenhaal to Head Venice Film Festival’s Jury

Los Angeles: American actor-filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal will head the international competition jury at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. “Gone Girl,” “Come!” The Festival, known for its films such as, announced that Gyllenhaal will lead the jury that awards the Golden Lion for Best Film and other official awards at the film premiere, which is planned to take place between September 2-12 this year.
The decision was taken by the Board of Directors of La Biennale di Venezia, which approved the recommendation of Venice Film Festival Director Alberto Barbera.
“I am thrilled to accept the invitation to lead this year’s Venice Film Festival jury. Venice has always supported honest, unique voices, and I am honored to play a role in continuing this bold and necessary tradition. I will be in curiosity, admiration and excitement, not judgment,” Gyllenhaal said in a statement.
Barbera said the actor represents an artistic path of unusual consistency, built over time with intelligence and courage.
“An actor who can portray disturbing and versatile characters, he also reinvented himself as a writer with Gone Girl, which won the Best Screenplay award at Venice in 2021…
“Having him as president of our jury means being able to rely on an authoritative and independent voice, animated by the authentic passion for art cinema that always represents the heart of the Festival,” Barbera added.
On the closing night of the festival, the jury, chaired by Gyllenhaal and consisting of up to seven international celebrities in the field of cinema and culture from different countries, will award the Golden Lion for Best Film, the Grand Jury Prize, the Silver Lion Award for Best Director, the Coppa Volpi for Best Actress, the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor, the Special Jury Prize, the Award for Best Screenplay and the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best New Young Actor or Actress.
Academy Award-nominated actor, director, producer and screenwriter Gyllenhaal, “The Bride!” The film he wrote, produced and directed this year. It is an imaginative continuation of the Frankenstein story.
The actor made his feature-length directorial debut with the film adapted from Elena Ferrante’s novel “The Lost Daughter”, starring Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson and Jessie Buckley, for which he also wrote the script. Gyllenhaal’s acting credits include “Secretary”, “Sherrybaby”, “Crazy Heart”, “Donnie Darko”, “Mona Lisa Smile”, “Stranger Than Fiction” and “The Dark Knight”.
