America’s Most Powerful Aircraft Carrier Returns To Port After Troubled Months At Sea

USS Gerald R. FordThe lead ship of the Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers is taking a brief break to freshen up during a long mission to the Middle East. Souda Bay in Greece will be Gerald R. Ford’s home for at least a few weeks, according to the United States Naval Institute.
The ship’s current deployment has been an intense one amid a number of problems on board, including a major fire in the laundry room that resulted in more than 200 smoke inhalation injuries. This, and the ongoing conflict with Iran, means Gerald R. Ford is more than ready for repairs.
More importantly, the ship is not out of the fight. a statement US Fleet Forces Command states: “The aircraft carrier remains fully mission capable” and continues: “The port call allows the ship to undergo effective evaluation, repair and resupply. The Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group continues its overseas deployment.”

Considering that operations in and around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz do not have a clear end date, it is likely that Gerald R. Ford will remain in office after repairs are made. It also appears that the Navy has no chance of disarming it for repairs in Greece.
The Gerald R. Ford is the largest warship ever built, with a length of 3,106 feet and a displacement of 100,000 tons. The first ship of the class that bears her name, this ship represents the tip of the spear when it comes to aircraft carrier technology. It is in the process of replacing the Nimitz class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
As of now, there is only one Gerald R. Ford class carrier in service. It is designed to have a 50-year service life, needing to be refueled only once, thanks to its two nuclear reactors, giving it essentially unlimited range in the ocean.
