The King must be looking forward to heading north for his annual trip to Scotland for a summer holiday and some well-deserved R&R. Last year the King and Queen spent the end of July at Sandringham before heading to their beloved home, Birkhall, at Balmoral Estate.
But for now the King must remain near London as he will need to fulfill his important constitutional role amid a change in Labor leadership on Monday. Sir Keir Starmer will need to formally tender his resignation during his meeting with the Monarch.
Charles will then replace him with Andy Burnham and ask him to form a government in his name. The formal process is called ‘kissing hands’ and will be recorded as such in the court circular. This will be the fourth time the King has presided over the ceremony, after Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir.
The new prime minister will still have more work to do, as he will need to lead a Privy Council meeting to allow him to be sworn in or sworn in as First Lord of the Treasury and welcome new ministers.
Especially after his recent Sussex show, Charles was looking forward to a few days of peace and quiet before visiting the Sandringham Flower Show on Wednesday and then flying to Scotland for the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
At the packed OVO Hydro arena, the King will read the message he placed inside one of the batons when the King launched the baton relay race at Buckingham Palace in March.
This year, for the first time, the King’s baton relay is marked by 74 individual batons representing each of the 74 participating Commonwealth countries and territories, rather than just one. All batons will come together again in Glasgow during the ceremony, which the Glasgow 2026 chairman promises will be “something bold, clearly unlike anything the Glasgow and Commonwealth Games have produced before”.
Meghan’s candidacy

Meghan Markle nominated for award (Image: Getty)
The hugely popular legal drama Suits didn’t receive a single Emmy nomination during its eight-year run as Meghan Markle’s paralegal Rachel Zane; so it might be a bit surprising that her axed lifestyle lineup gets one.
She gushed on Instagram: “Huge congratulations to the amazing team, producers and crew working on ‘With Love, Meghan’ at Netflix. We’ve been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lifestyle Series!”
It’s one of five nominees, alongside The Motherhood and A Different Breed, a reality TV series that offers a look at the world of competitive dog sports. Now we must look forward to his return to New York, scene of paparazzi photographers’ ‘near disastrous’ car chase, in May 2023 for the awards show at the end of November.
I wonder if she will be supported by her husband or if she will make sure she gets all the attention. After all, she rarely appeared on With Love Meghan.
If they were a normal couple, Harry would be there to share in her glory. But the Sussexes are far from normal.
drowning our pain

King spoke of ‘smothering our sorrows’ after England’s World Cup defeat (Image: Getty)
England’s hopes of winning the World Cup 60 years after Sir Alf Ramsey guided the team to victory came to a disappointing end on Wednesday as Argentina scored two late goals to book themselves a place in Sunday’s final.
As with every football tournament, the country rallied behind the Three Lions with endless chants of “Coming Home” and stayed up late in the heatwave to cheer them on from afar.
But once again we are experiencing a bitter disappointment. And as the King summed it up beautifully on Thursday: “It’s a good day to drown out a few sorrows.” (As for me, I’ll be quietly cheering after they unseat Spain in the office draw this evening).
end of an era

Prince George turns 13 this week (Image: Getty)
The Prince and Princess of Wales hope to enjoy every minute of the school holidays this year, as change will come to the Welsh household in September. Young Prince George is set to turn a whole new chapter as he enters his teenage years on Wednesday. She’s already almost as tall as her mother and looks more mature every time she appears in public with her parents.
But it will get bigger as he packs his bags for Eton in September. It will be a big change for the family if three siblings do not go to the same school for the first time. William and Catherine helped all three prepare for the change; George was already staying at Lambrook a few nights a week.
But turning 13 is a big milestone for everyone. And their babies won’t look so little anymore. I’m sure George will be looking forward to this new chapter with a mix of excitement and trepidation, but his parents will always be on hand to guide him through this process – especially when he’s only a few miles down the road.
goodbye for now
Speaking of milestone birthdays… I turn 30 next Saturday, so I’m understandably taking a bit of a break. But I’m not going to Disney or flying to the beach (as I originally planned); I’m going to Glasgow for a working holiday.
I will be spending the next few weeks covering bowling and parabowl events at the Scottish Events Campus.
This is my showcase for the Birmingham 2022 Games and it was an honor to be a part of it, so I’m looking forward to getting in on the action once again. Rebecca Russell will hold down the fort for me.
