Cricket Australia (CA) has announced a 15-member squad for the first Ashes Test against England, scheduled to begin on 21 November 2025 at Perth Stadium. With regular captain Pat Cummins out due to a back injury, Steve Smith will take the helm, while Travis Head will serve as vice-captain. Cummins’ absence is a significant setback for Australia, especially given his role as both captain and bowler. However, he is expected to recover in time for the second Test in Brisbane.
In contrast, Smith’s return to captaincy in the Ashes series brings back fond memories of previous successful tenures. Under his guidance, Australia aim to maintain their impressive home record, especially at Perth Stadium, where they are yet to lose a Test match.
The team offers notable chances for Jake Weatherald, Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott, who are yet to earn Test caps.
While Weatherald, who is known for his aggressive batting style in domestic competitions, is the prime candidate to open the innings along with Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne is also in contention for the top spot.
