Steve Smith to lead in Pat Cummins’ absence, Sam Konstas misses out

Ashes 2025/26: Steve Smith will lead Australia in the absence of Pat Cummins as the squad for the first Test is announced. While Sam Konstas misses the match, Marnus Labuschagne returns. All the details on Australia’s Ashes 2025/26 first Test squad, captaincy update and key selections.

Cricket Australia (CA) has announced a 15-member squad for the first Ashes Test against England, scheduled to begin on 21 November 2025 at Perth Stadium. With regular captain Pat Cummins out due to a back injury, Steve Smith will take the helm, while Travis Head will serve as vice-captain. Cummins’ absence is a significant setback for Australia, especially given his role as both captain and bowler. However, he is expected to recover in time for the second Test in Brisbane.

In contrast, Smith’s return to captaincy in the Ashes series brings back fond memories of previous successful tenures. Under his guidance, Australia aim to maintain their impressive home record, especially at Perth Stadium, where they are yet to lose a Test match.

The team offers notable chances for Jake Weatherald, Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott, who are yet to earn Test caps.

While Weatherald, who is known for his aggressive batting style in domestic competitions, is the prime candidate to open the innings along with Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne is also in contention for the top spot. His selection offers strategic flexibility, especially following David Warner’s retirement from Test cricket in early 2025.

Doggett and Abbott strengthen the tempo attack with their unique skills. Known for his precision and leaping, Doggett has consistently excelled in the Sheffield Shield, while Abbott’s dual ability with bat and ball makes him a valuable addition to the Australia squad.

An important advantage for the team was the return of Cameron Green, who made a full recovery after back surgery. The versatile youngster adds depth to the squad with his dual skills and will be supported by Beau Webster, another adaptable all-rounder.

The selectors emphasized the importance of having a versatile squad that allows adjustments to the team structure according to field conditions and player health.

Australia squad for the first Ashes Test: Steve Smith (c), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey (wk), Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head (vc), Josh Inglis (wc), Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster.
