Tories demand SNP face inquiry into £400k Murrell theft | Politics | News

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg that Murrell’s ex-wife Nicola Sturgeon should also face questions about her knowledge of the crime.

Mr Philp added that former SNP party leader Nicola Sturgeon also “has more questions to answer”.

Government ministers have also called for an investigation, while Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden said the SNP “has been the dominant force in Scottish politics for 20 years, and its dominance extends not just into politics but into society and culture, and is maintained by a claim to virtue often rejected elsewhere in the UK, particularly in England”.

Current party leader John Swinney has rejected calls for an inquiry but critics say it should not be held in Westminster.

Murrell pleaded guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh on Monday last week, admitting using “false or inaccurate accounting codes and disclosures for the purchase of the items in question” to “conceal the true nature of the purchases in question”.

Nicola Sturgeon stated that she was angry with her ex-husband and told the BBC: “Am I angry with him? I don’t even think that’s enough to cover up the issue.”

“Because not only did he lie to me and betray me – and if this was a completely private thing, that would be bad enough – I mean, I’ve been really touched by some of the messages I’ve received this week from women who have been betrayed by their husbands, lied to by their husbands, who have talked to me about the depth of pain they feel, under circumstances that are not the same, but some are not different, and I feel all of that.

“But it’s more than that. He put me in a really dangerous situation, exposed me to public slander, pointed the finger of suspicion at me – you know, humiliation.”
