Heartbreaking text exchanges between Ann Widdecombe and a TV producer have emerged that show the former minister did not respond to numerous phone calls. The exchange, which apparently came just minutes after Ms Widdecombe emailed Express.co.uk to confirm an interview slot, captured the last ordinary moments in the life of the 78-year-old former Conservative minister and UK Reform figure. The police then launched a murder investigation.
Immediately after appearing on TalkTV earlier that day, Ms Widdecombe was co-ordinating a Zoom interview for Channel 5’s Matt Allwright program at 1pm. In posts shared by GB News via
Ms. Widdecombe responded warmly and helpfully, confirming the normal email address for the materials and acknowledging receipt with “Received! Panic over!!” confirms with. At 12:19 – his last known message.
Minutes later, at 12:48 p.m., the producer texted her again, urging her to join the Zoom connection. There is no answer. Multiple follow-up voice calls go unanswered between 12:53 and 1:14 p.m.
Police believe Ms Widdecombe was attacked around 12.30pm, meaning she had just 11 minutes to live after her last message. He was found dead at his home in Dartmoor the next day.
Express.co.uk emailed Ms Widdecombe earlier in the day to arrange a phone call and was told: “Okay but I’ve been busy all this morning.”
He was then asked if he could speak between 15.30 and 16.00, and at 12.09 he replied: “Yes, no problem.”
In a statement released on Saturday evening, Devon Police ACC Matt Longman said: “I would like to start by expressing my thanks to the local community and those who have come forward with their information so far.
“We are working quickly on this investigation.
“Officers are making progress and continuing a number of investigations.
“We have taken the active decision not to release any further information, including descriptions of potential suspects or CCTV footage, at this time.
“Premature disclosure of such information could compromise ongoing investigations and harm future investigative opportunities.”
The decision not to release further details was taken on an “operational basis”, he said, adding that police would make the information public when “appropriate and necessary”.
