Pint-sized home in leafy London suburb that is narrower than a Tube carriage goes on sale for £642,000

A pint-sized house no wider than a tube carriage has hit the market for £642,000 in a leafy west London suburb.

Located in well-heeled Kew, the compact cottage is slimmer than a Routemaster bus and measures just seven feet nine inches at its narrowest point.

And the small terrace, spread over three floors, is only about eight feet wide at its widest point.

Tucked into what was once a garage, the property is described by estate agents as ‘deceptively spacious’.

It’s on the market for a hefty £642,000, more than double the price of the average house in North Yorkshire (£322,871) and more than three times the price in Durham (£210,148).

The listing has already caused a stir on Reddit’s SpottedOnRightmove forum, where property spotters share intriguing homes.

One house hunter said: ‘You shouldn’t be able to reach out and touch one side of your house with your fingers and the other side with your toes.’

Another user joked in response: ‘Especially if you’re Janette Krankie,’ referring to the 1980s children’s TV favourite.

Another browser joked: ‘Highly recommended to watch early – probably before anyone tries to bring in a corner sofa.

‘You’ll need narrow furniture, narrow shoulders and a very understanding mover.’

Meanwhile, someone else commented: ‘You need to buy a Smart car so you can park half a car outside your house.’

One Reddit user noted: ‘Gale kitchen. Galley bedroom. Galley hall.’

Estate agents Halletts describe the property as a ‘delightful’ and ‘quirky’ two-bedroom house.

The sales announcement on Rightmove says: ‘Spread over three floors and beautifully bright with modern fittings, neutral decor and hard floors throughout.

‘Excellent location within walking distance of various stations, local shops and various restaurants. ‘An early viewing of this deceptively expansive property is highly recommended.’

In an indication of the capital’s eye-popping property prices, the house last sold for £492,000 in 2018; This means the current owner is hopeful of a return of £150,000.

Located in the exclusive south-west borough of Richmond, Kew is among the most expensive places to buy property in the UK, with average prices for house movers frequently exceeding £930,000.

The interior footprint of the cottage is only 667 m2; This equates to less than one-quarter the size of a tennis court and slightly more than four times the average parking space in the United States.

It still manages to fit in a bathroom and two toilets, as well as a modest first-floor balcony.

Some Reddit users were more complimentary about the home, praising its current owners for making the most of its unusual dimensions.

One wrote: ‘Attractive house, although narrow and surprisingly expensive.

‘They made it look bright, airy and larger than it actually is.

‘I’m single, my daughter has grown up and flown home. I would live happily in a house like this. It’s nowhere near London.’

Another added: ‘Yes, it’s not much bigger than a flat but it’s a very liveable home for a family of one to three.’

But despite its size, the house is not the finest in London. The narrowest of these is believed to be a five-storey property in Shepherd’s Bush that is just 171 centimeters wide.

The second narrowest house can be found at the prized Notting Hill Gate, which is just 2.1 meters at its narrowest point, roughly the width of a black cab.

Estate agents had previously marketed the two-bedroom property on Peel Street as a ‘bijou bolt hole’.
