Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5 AI model rivals Fable 5 and is cheaper
anthropic On Friday, it announced its latest AI model, Claude Opus 5, which is said to be the best-performing and most cost-effective offering in a number of industry benchmarks.
The Opus 5 outperforms the last model Anthropic released, the Claude Fable 5, in coding and information work benchmarks, and the company said it’s “designed to be used every day,” according to a blog post. Opus 5 is also half the price of Fable 5 and will cost users $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens.
Anthropic said Opus 5 was not the most advanced in terms of “risky, dual-use capabilities” such as cybersecurity.
The launch of the model comes as Anthropic and its chief rival OpenAI are working to satisfy a more cost-conscious customer base where businesses are less inclined to try expensive models without a clear picture of the return on their investment. Antropik also faces pressure from competitors offering cheaper offerings. Microsoft, Amazon, Googleand a number of Chinese startups.
“Companies are looking for value in our feedback and our customer base,” Dianne Penn, Anthropic’s head of research product management, told CNBC in an interview. “If it’s a cheaper model or a cheaper offering but doesn’t achieve a similar level of quality, it’s not really useful.”
Anthropic has been the subject of intense scrutiny since it released a model called the Claude Mythos Preview in April and made it available to a select group of users. The company said the model is highly skilled at cybersecurity and excels at discovering and exploiting vulnerabilities in software.
In June, Anthropic released an updated version of the model, Mythos 5, and also released another version of the model, Fable 5, which it says is safe for general use. According to a blog post, the company said Fable 5’s capabilities are superior to any other publicly released model.
Anthropic was forced to briefly disable access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5 days after release to comply with a government export control directive citing “national security authorities.” After nearly two weeks of intense negotiations, export controls were lifted and Anthropic was able to restore access to both models.
Penn said Anthropic continues to collaborate with government agencies as part of its pre-deployment and testing, including Opus 5. The company said Opus 5 lags behind Mythos 5 in offensive cybersecurity and biology research.
