Antisemitism censorship hits Bendigo Writers Festival

Dr Rosemary Sorensen, the founder of the Bendio Writers Festival, reports the order of censorship about the definition of “anti -Semitism”, which triggers the mass withdrawal of La Trobe University and leaves the festival in turmoil.

A cold day in the center of Victoria. When the weekend ends, just calling where I lived Bendigo Writers Festival He’s dragging himself towards the finish line. Will the self -injured wounds be fatal?

The news exploded last Wednesday, filtered on Thursday and titles Friday. Incredibly, surprisingly, some participants were sent by E -Post in the “La Trobe Sunar” sessions within the program, and asked them to sign the rules of behavior in accordance with La Trobe University’s censored “antisemitism” definition.

When the traditional opening day of ABC Central Victoria began on Friday until 9 am, the Bendigo Writers Festival faced the collapse. Randa Abdel-FattahHe was planned to talk about his book Discipline (As the festival program said, ‘Speech cost and Israel’s genocide in Gaza, the privilege that remains silent’), saying that he could not participate in a festival who wants censorship.

After the cancellation wave was watched until the festival program was crushed. The author was canceled after the session.

In the afternoon of Friday, the statements put forward by La Trobe University and the festival (but the “owner” of the festival, not the great submissive city), further inflamed to recoil, I received a call from the ABC state -wide radio. As the founder of the festival, do I discuss what this means for Bendigo?

My first reaction, “NO”. You won’t weigh it when you go out. But then I thought again. That day, the authors talked in such a compelling way about what such a rule of behavior meant and why it should be called unbearable. Randa Abdel-Fattah, then Jess HillIn the program I approached me. They were very clear, very effective and fragile, I thought I had responsibility to support such an attitude. In these pages, I wrote that there is a moral obligation for anyone who can speak to support Palestine.

Over the last few days, many times, to myself and loudly, I said many variations in expertulation, “Strewth!” We still don’t know how this is, and we’re not likely to do it. People told me that this would not be in my watch, and I am grateful to recognize the Bendigo Writers Festival for all these years. But I think it could have been if I was still there. Or maybe not, because given the current structure of the festival, I would have resigned even if I wanted to continue.

I always had an unusual fluent administration: I would say that if it became a council event, it would lose its power and energy. My freedom was a gift given between others late hours David lloydLater, the manager called capital venues and activities.

David and I have made some variable and usually unpleasant meetings, but the Council executives and the Bendigo Campus Director of La Trobe University, and a management committee that is the mayor of the then paragraph at that time Rod fyfffeHe realized what the festival meant for Bendigo and most importantly, it was difficult and risky by nature. I think they trusted me.

Victoria, the State Library, cancels the pro -Palestinian writer for 'cultural security'

This trust was a gift, and I hope I didn’t get it slightly. In addition to the needs of the community and the authors, it was important to respond to the integrity of the writers of the Writers Festival. Some authors remembered me as a book and art journalist and sometimes helped. At other times, it meant that our invitations were rejected.

I thought I would make my best decision when I reached the difficult year after Covid. Clare Wright La Trobe University for the help of bringing the program together. Clare is very special. He is respected by the authors, he has a strong reputation as a historian and writer, and he has a kind of driving that can do things ten times faster than most people.

When Clare says “Yes”It was just a pleasure: Bendigo was already enriched with his relationship with the University of La Trobe, and would greatly benefit what Clare could bring to the city.

Things are blurred from my point of view – and the warnings of the authors about the consequences of these rules of behavior in the last few days are important. How did a sponsor/partner demand that a council event demands restrictions on contracted people at a council? What makes it necessary to impose these restrictions so close to the event? And the festival, considering the predictable results (absolutely), what legal advice did he seek before sending a Council -approved letter?

At an alternative date, if I had been still involved in this revitalizing, revitalizing atmosphere created by the collision and collision of the writers at a festival, the letter of Grotesque Rules of Behavior Rules of Behavior, probably without my knowledge, would definitely be sent without knowledge and listen to the protests of the festival management.

It would be compulsory to resign – but they don’t seem to care about Clare Wright’s resignation, so I doubt that the departure of Sorensen will bother them too much.

Someone told me that the right thing to do is that the festival had a mistake (which seems to be a very small word under conditions) and that they would undertake to change and make a new start. In order to happen, the silence of La Trobe University and the Great Sent’s Directorate Directorate (beyond useless expressions) should be broken. If this courage, understanding and honesty, this would not be in the first place.
