Apple Cuts iPhone Air Production As Users Flock To Other Models

Apple’s iPhone Air is an impressive feat of engineering, but that hasn’t exactly translated into explosive sales. According to a new report South Korea based site The ElecApple plans to reduce iPhone Air production due to lower-than-expected demand. According to an analyst from Mizuho Securities, the report states that iPhone Air production may be reduced by approximately 1 million units.

However, this does not mean that iPhone demand has decreased. On the contrary, interest in the entry-level iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro remains incredibly strong, with both models proving more popular than the ultra-thin iPhone Air. To this point, Apple has reportedly increased iPhone 17 production by 2 million units, iPhone 17 Pro production by 1 million units, and iPhone 17 Pro Max production by 4 million units. Overall, iPhone 17 sales appear to be quite strong, which is consistent with previous reports we’ve seen over the past few weeks.

Apple’s iPhone 17 is still hard to find

To be honest, it’s not surprising that Apple is reducing production of the iPhone Air. While the device is impressively light and feels great in the hand, it’s really hard to beat the value proposition of the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models. Indeed, many people said that this year’s iPhone 17 was the best entry-level iPhone in recent years. As an illustrative example, the iPhone 16’s battery life (as measured by video playback) was a modest 2 hours compared to the iPhone 15. Meanwhile, iPhone 17 supports up to 30 hours of video playback, compared to iPhone 16 which supports 22 hours of video playback. This is a significant leap.

Speaking of the popularity of the iPhone 17, shipping estimates for some configurations are still stuck at 2-3 weeks in the US, UK, France, Switzerland, China, and Japan. If you want to get an iPhone 17 as quickly as possible, you’d better choose the 256 GB model because the 512 GB model seems to be in short supply.

It is also worth noting that pre-orders for the iPhone 17 broke records in China this year. Additionally, iPhone 17 pre-orders in China reportedly exceeded the pre-order volume of the iPhone 16 in its first 24 hours within the first few minutes of going on sale. Apple doesn’t break out iPhone sales data by model type, but we’ll likely hear additional information from the company when it holds its quarterly earnings conference call later this month.

Apple doesn’t need the iPhone Air to be a big hit

It’s important to note that Apple’s iPhone Air didn’t need to be hugely popular. It was probably never designed that way. All in all, the device occupies a unique and somewhat odd place in Apple’s product line-up. Consider that the device is more expensive than the iPhone 17 but has a less impressive camera setup than the iPhone 17 Pro. In terms of pricing and features, the iPhone Air stands in no man’s land.

But that doesn’t matter, because the device itself is the beginning of the long-rumored foldable iPhone. To this end, Bloomberg Last month, it was reported that the foldable iPhone would look like “two titanium iPhone Airs side by side” when opened.

In a sense, the iPhone Air is a proof of concept. This represents Apple’s ongoing efforts to develop an incredibly thin form factor without sacrificing processing power or battery life. The innovations made in the iPhone Air will most likely be carried over to the foldable iPhone. If all goes as planned, Apple will launch a foldable iPhone as part of the 2026 iPhone lineup. However, a recent report conveys that the launch may be postponed to 2027 as Apple has not yet decided on a final design for the key components.
