Apple exec shake-up continues, onboards Meta’s chief legal officer Jennifer Newstead as new general counsel

iPhone maker Apple Inc. confirmed in a Dec. 4 statement that it will replace former Meta Platform Chief Legal Officer Jennifer Newstead as General Counsel with incumbent Katherine (or Kate) Adams leaving effective March 1.
In addition to the changes in the legal head, Apple’s government affairs manager and vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, Lisa Jackson, will also retire next month in January 2026.
Specifically, Adams will take over State Affairs until his retirement in 2026, after which it will be headed by Newstead. And Newstead’s title will be General Counsel and senior vice president of Government Affairs, reflecting the merger of the two organizations.
Meanwhile, the Environment and Social Initiatives teams will report to Apple’s chief operating officer Sabih Khan.
Apple’s leadership is changing: Is talent migration continuing?
Adams’ departure comes amid an executive shakeup, with Apple’s chief operating officer Jeff Williams retiring last month, second only to CEO Tim Cook.
On December 3, Apple confirmed that longtime designer Stephen Lemay would replace lead designer Alan Dye, who left for Meta this week. The Apple Watch user interface has been behind some of the company’s most iconic launches since the Steve Jobs era, including iOS7 and the Liquid Glass user interface.
Before that, on December 1, Apple announced that John Giannandrea, senior vice president of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, had resigned but would continue to serve as a consultant until spring 2026 before retiring.
In 2019, legendary executive Jony Ive left the company and now works with Sam Altman at OpenAI.
Additionally, as CEO Tim Cook approaches retirement age, another prominent name, Johny Srouji (Apple’s silicon chief), is “evaluating his future at the company,” according to an earlier report from Bloomberg.
Who is Jennifer Newstead?
Newstead joined Meta (then Facebook) in 2019 from the United States Department of State, where he was legal counsel overseeing legal issues affecting the course of U.S. foreign relations.
Earlier in his career, Newstead also held a variety of other government positions, including as general counsel for the White House Office of Management and Budget, deputy attorney general for the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Policy, assistant White House attorney, and law clerk to Justice Stephen Breyer of the U.S. Supreme Court, Apple said.
Prior to that, he was a partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP for a dozen years, where he advised global companies on a wide range of matters. Newstead holds an AB from Harvard University and a JD from Yale Law School.
According to the Bloomberg report, Newstead scored a big win for Meta, which put behind the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) allegation that it violated antitrust law focusing on social apps Instagram and WhatsApp.
