Setti D. Warren, director of Harvard’s Institute of politics and former Newton mayor, dies at 55

Harvard Kennedy School Dean Jeremy M. Weinstein and Harvard College Dean David J. Deming announced Warren’s death in a message to the university community, describing her as a “visionary and tireless leader” who was deeply committed to public service and encouraged open debate on campus.
“It is often said that the measure of a person’s life is found in the service he renders to others – and by that standard Setti’s life serves as an example for us all,” the deans wrote.
Remembering X, Harvard Kennedy School said: “It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Setti Warren, Director of the Institute of Politics.”
Who was Setti D. Warren?
Warren made history as the first person elected by the public African American mayor He served two terms in Newton, Massachusetts, from 2010 to 2018. His career spanned all levels of public service, including roles in the White House, roles in FEMA’s New England operations, and as a naval intelligence specialist during the Iraq War.
In 2017, Warren decided to run for governor of Massachusetts rather than seek a third term as mayor. During her campaign, Warren supported free public college tuition and a single-payer healthcare system. He withdrew six months before the election, citing financial constraints.
Warren directed the Institute of Politics at Harvard and previously served as executive director of the Shorenstein Center for Media, Politics, and Public Policy.
Weinstein and Deming said he will be remembered for guiding both institutions through a period of lively debate, research and student engagement. “Setti’s students loved him, and their influence – like his – will be reflected in future generations,” the message read.
Warren, a devout Catholic, often spoke about the role of faith and social justice in leadership. “Whenever he faced a challenge, he ran toward it — rather than away from it — and our university and our country are better suited for it,” the deans said.
