Appoint Leaders of Opposition for Maharashtra Assembly: Uddhav

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday, December 6, 2025, said that leaders of Opposition (LoPs) should be appointed for the upcoming Winter Session of the Maharashtra Assembly as it has been more than a year since the Assembly elections.

“Why is the government afraid of the LoP despite having such a majority? The LoP needs to be appointed and we demand it,” Mr. Thackeray said, adding that it was a Constitutional duty.

“If the government fails to appoint a LoP, this will be the first time a session will be held without a LoP. If no LoP is appointed, then the posts of Deputy Prime Minister should also be abolished as this is against the Constitution,” Mr. Thackeray added.

Shiv Sena (UBT), with 20 MLAs, the most among the Opposition in the state, has nominated senior MP Bhaskar Jadhav as LoP to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Congress has nominated Satej Patil for the LoP post in the Maharashtra Legislative Council after Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve’s term ends in August.

Speaking about local body elections, Mr. Thackeray said the Supreme Court should take this decision. suo motu An announcement should be made about the “confusion” in the electoral rolls in Maharashtra and the Opposition should request the court not to hold local body elections until these are rectified.

The Supreme Court has ordered elections to all local bodies in the state to be held by January 31, 2026.
