Armed police shoot man dead in Bedford after 11-hour standoff

Police officers shot and killed a man in Bedford.

Bedfordshire Police said the incident, which involved a man in his 40s, happened on Tuesday morning.

The force said officers were called to reports of damaged vehicles on Aylesbury Road shortly after 10.40pm on Monday.

Bedfordshire Police added that the man was found “barricaded” at a property and “making threats”.

Police said specialist armed officers and police negotiators tried to contact the man for “several hours”.

Citizens in the surrounding area were also evacuated from their homes.

Shortly after 9.30am on Tuesday, the man “showed a gun before police opened fire”.

The force made a mandatory referral to the police monitor, who launched an investigation.
