Around 600 tonnes of fish sold at Kasimedu on Sunday

The market at Kasimedu Fishing Port revived early on Sunday morning after a gap of over 61 days, selling nearly 600 tonnes of fish.

The wholesale fish auction started at 2 a.m. and retail sales started at 5 a.m., attracting the attention of many eager buyers.

The annual hunting ban ended at midnight on June 15, and boats that went on 4-5 day trips returned on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

“Some of the boats had been returning every day since Tuesday after a few hours of fishing. They brought around 250 to 400 tons of fish every day. Of the total 800 mechanized boats that docked at the port, 50 were being repaired, 600 went fishing and 120 returned with fish on the first Sunday,” said a source from the Fisheries Department.

Boats brought back fish like mullet, wow meenoctopus, anchovy, small size paarai, and shrimp.

“The prices were quite nominal. Neither too high nor too low, which made both fishermen and buyers happy,” said a trader.

The fish coming from Kasımedu are put into baskets by women and sold in local markets in the city.

Fishermen proudly displayed their oversized grouper fish. Kalavaanand sharks caught in their nets.
