Arsenal: Should Mikel Arteta refine style or will it be more of same for Gunners?

Arsenal They’ve just come off the heartbreak of the Champions League final, but they don’t have time to wallow.

Sunday’s Premier League title celebrations in north London may have refocused minds on next season’s tasks as they aim to remain at the top of English football and go one step further in Europe.

Defeat to Paris St-Germain in Budapest on Saturday night came solely on penalties, but Arsenal’s limitations against top-flight opposition were evident even before the shoot-out.

Arsenal had less than 25% possession and Kai Havertz’s early opening goal was the only shot on target in 120 minutes of football.

After the match, PSG midfielder Joao Neves said Luis Enrique’s team was “the only one who wants to play”.

Former Arsenal defender and Premier League champion Matthew Upson told BBC Sport that Havertz’s early goal sort of ruined the match.

“If it had been 0-0 at half-time you might have seen a slight lead on Arsenal, but naturally when you score that goal you go slightly into guard mode,” Upson said.

“Every team does this and of course PSG dominates the ball, but the possession statistics are actually quite scary for a final with the two best teams. Having a 75-25% difference in possession in a Champions League final is almost unheard of.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta described PSG as “the best team in the world”.

He said it was their talent that determined Arsenal’s style.

He also hinted that his team could emulate the French team’s style of play in the future.

“I haven’t seen what they can do with individual movements with the ball,” Arteta said.

“It’s not the plan to play in certain areas when you don’t have the ball, but they force you to do it.”

So does the Spaniard need to improve his style next season to take Arsenal to the next level, increase possessions and keep opponents at bay?

Or will we see more of the same formula that brought Arsenal to the Premier League title?
