Art of NYC mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s wife comes into focus after election

Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, reminds one of Hunter Biden due to her rising profile, connections and politically charged “sketches”, according to one of the leading US artists.
“He will be greatly supported by the arts community because of who he is and what he communicates,” conservative political artist Jon McNaughton told Fox News Digital.
His comments came after Duwaji had been sharing his mostly black-and-white drawings online for months.
“Who you are in the art world can have a huge impact on marketability. Look at Hunter Biden,” he added. “Hunter became famous for his art thanks to his political connections.”

Mamdani, 34, a Democratic Socialist, was about to be elected mayor of New York on November 4. On election day, Duwaji posted about: Instagram about art.
“I saw things in October that made me want to make art,” he wrote, before listing 14 artistic elements he enjoyed.
“I don’t remember ever seeing the wife of an elected official do that,” she said McNaughton. “They seem like a couple who share the same values and politics. Their art will likely resonate with those who elect it,” he added. “It’s like a sketchbook of students’ ideas.”
Meanwhile, the former president’s son launched his own art career in 2021, exhibiting abstract works.
His paintings are said to sell for $500,000 per person Washington Post.
In an interview with New York TimesHunter said painting “channels my energy into something positive.”
“This keeps me away from people and places I shouldn’t be,” he added.

Although she kept a low profile during her husband’s campaign, Duwaji sparked some controversy in October when she shared an Instagram post by a Palestinian influencer known to be celebrating Hamas’ terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023, according to media reports.
Per New York PostThe Brooklyn-based animator and illustrator posted a photo honoring Saleh al-Jafarawi. She reportedly captioned her post, “Dear Jafari,” followed by four broken heart emojis.
“As he explains in his posts, his art reflects his personal beliefs and serves as a way to convey his heart and mind to others,” added McNaughton.
“For those who resonate with his message, this would make perfect sense; but it is unlikely to change anyone’s mind. Ultimately, he remains a reflection of himself,” he added.

In March, Duwaji also shared a post depicting Palestinian-Algerian activist Mahmoud Khalil, who was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“On Saturday night, Palestinian-Algerian activist Mahmoud Khalil was abducted without notice by ICE from his Columbia-owned apartment in New York,” Duwaji wrote. InstagramNext to an animated sketch of Khalil.
“This is an attack on free speech and sets a frightening precedent for anyone who speaks the truth. Resist,” he wrote.

“His art has a modern illustration quality, a woodblock print aesthetic, and a blend of Gothic and Art Nouveau,” explained McNaughton.
“Every good idea starts with a sketch. We develop the concept using simple forms and then develop it further. I have seen many similar sketchbooks of students. This is not an insult, just an observation,” he said.
“The ‘Eyes on Jenin’ animation reminded me of George Floyd with his knee on his neck. It uses the same visualization that led to the BLM riots,” he added.

Duwaji met Mamdani on the dating app Hinge in 2022. They got engaged in October 2024, celebrating their engagement in Dubai.
The couple later married in a civil ceremony in New York in early 2025 and had a three-day Indian wedding in Uganda in August.
“Art has a powerful capacity to focus a movement. While some people perceive political art as propaganda, artists throughout history have used their creations to speak for or against political trends,” said McNaughton.
“Most galleries and museums look for a great story, and being on the right side of politics opens doors and increases sales,” he added.

“This only counts as propaganda if it’s government commissioned or if you’re a conservative. Pun intended,” McNaughton concluded.
