Arthur’s Seat fire: Crews tackle blaze on Edinburgh landmark
Fire crews battle a blaze at Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh on Sunday evening.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) had four devices at the scene after responding to reports of the fire at 6.38pm.
It comes as SFRS continues to battle a bushfire in the Cairngorms that has been burning since Wednesday.
A spokesman said: “We were made aware of an open fire at Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh at 6.38pm on Sunday 19 July.
“Operations Control mobilized four fire trucks and crews are still on scene.
“No casualties reported.”
Earlier on Sunday, Cairngorms park officials said the large-scale bushfire affecting the area was now “largely contained” and they expected evacuated residents to be able to return to their homes “later today”.
On Sunday afternoon park bosses said the fire, burning at its peak of nearly four square kilometres, was largely under control.
The park administration announced that the incident was continuing as firefighters and other partners responded to the fire together.
Park bosses said resources, including helicopter support, were essential in fighting fires in hard-to-reach areas.
Gavin Miles, planning and venues manager at the park authority, said: “The news from Glenmore this morning is very encouraging, with our colleagues from SFRS stating that the fire is now largely contained. However, this is still a live situation and crews are still very active on the ground, so we are not taking anything for granted at this stage.”
“We are truly grateful for the continued efforts of everyone who helped fight the fire in Glenmore and the cooperation of local residents, visitors and businesses during what I know has been a very difficult time.
“Given the large number of people and machines on site, it is likely that the Ski Trail and surrounding areas will be off-limits for some time, but we hope that residents and campers directly affected by the restricted area will be able to gain access later today.”
