Powerful Earthquake Strikes Pakistan In Early Hours, Tremors Shake Cities, Experts Warn Of Hidden Danger Zones | World News

Islamabad: Pakistan was jolted awake by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake that hit the country early Friday morning, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake occurred at a depth of 135 kilometers and tremors were experienced in many regions.
NCS shared the technical details of the earthquake in
Authorities are monitoring the situation and more information on damage or casualties is awaited.

Seismologists explain that shallow earthquakes tend to be more dangerous than deep earthquakes because seismic waves reach the surface quickly and create stronger ground shaking. This can increase damage to buildings and increase the risk of injury or death.
The region, which includes Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India, is one of the most seismically active regions on the planet. It is located at the collision boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it prone to moderate to strong earthquakes that can be felt beyond national borders.
Pakistan, in particular, is located on many major fault lines and is considered one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Provinces such as Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan are located at the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while Punjab and Sindh are located at the northwestern edge of the Indian plate, creating a high risk of frequent seismic events.
Balochistan is particularly vulnerable as it lies near the active boundary between the Arabian and Eurasian plates. Punjab also experiences periodic tremors due to its tectonic position, and although Sindh is slightly less at risk, it remains susceptible to seismic activity due to its positioning along plate edges.
Authorities continue to monitor for aftershocks and urge residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols.
