Assam Assembly Elections 2026: Congress rolls out fifth list, names seven candidates ahead of April 9 polls

The Indian National Congress on Saturday released its fifth candidate list for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections 2026, which includes seven candidates from constituencies including Gossaigaon, Bijni and Katigorah.

According to the list released by the All India Congress Committee, the candidates include Joseph Hasda (Gossaigaon), Birkhang Boro (Dotma-ST), Rajat Kanti Saha (Bijni), Anchula Gwara Daimary (Bhergaon), Narayan Adhikari (Mazbat), Nirmal Langthasa (Haflong-ST) and Amar Chand Jain (Katigorah).

The latest list comes at a time when the party is stepping up preparations for the final phase of the election campaign, with political activity increasing and alliances changing in the poll-bound state.

Voting for the 126-member Assam assembly will be held on April 9 and counting will be held on May 4, 2026. The ruling BJP-led alliance led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is trying to retain power after its victory in 2021. He is contesting from Jalukbari constituency.

The Gaurav Gogoi-led Congress is eyeing a comeback, banking on anti-incumbency and opposition consolidation even as alliance dynamics remain volatile. Gogoi is contesting from Jorhat seat.

With several candidate lists already published, parties are now expected to intensify their ground campaigns and focus on constituency-level contests in what will become a closely watched contest.
