Assam Cabinet Expansion on June 5 after BJP’s strong poll win

The results of the parliamentary polls were announced on May 4. The BJP achieved a major victory by winning 82 seats in the 126-member assembly, to which its allies won 20 seats.
Although the prime minister and four other ministers were sworn in on May 12, the expansion of the council of ministers was postponed after many people requested appointment to the council of ministers.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made several visits to Delhi after taking oath. He was a senior BJP leader in New Delhi.
“The Council of Ministers led by HCM @himantabiswa will be expanded on June 5, 2026,” the Prime Minister’s office said on X.
Sarma said several times: “The expansion of the council of ministers will take place after the convocation session and in the first week of June.”
Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, Charan Boro and Ajanta Neog were sworn in on May 12. While both Teli and Neog belong to the BJP, Bora belongs to the BJP’s ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP, Boro comes from another ally Bodoland People’s Front. A senior BJP leader said, “The size of the council of ministers, including the Prime Minister, is 18. New faces will be included in the council of ministers and a few others). Former ministers may not find a place in the council of ministers. But representation of each region will be ensured in the council of ministers.”
The leader said the BPF was interested in a ministerial place in the council of ministers. Similarly, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will also have to settle for one ministerial berth.”
“Earlier government allies had two ministerial seats each. In 2016, AGP got two ministerial seats, in 2021 AGP again got two ministerial seats. In 2021, United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) was an ally of BJP and got two ministerial seats. Now we have an alliance with BPF,” the leader said.
This time, the BJP won 82 seats in the 126-member assembly, down from 60 seats in 2021. Together the NDA won 102 seats. Both AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.
