Assam Hit by 5.1 Magnitude Earthquake; No Casualty Reported

Guwahati: A 5.1 magnitude earthquake shook central Assam on Monday morning, an official bulletin said. Officials said there have been no reports of anyone being injured or any property damaged yet.

According to the report of the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake was recorded at 4.17 am at a depth of 50 kilometers in the Morigaon district on the south bank of the Brahmaputra.

It was stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the center of Assam at 26.37 North latitude and 92.29 East longitude.

People in neighboring Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar and Goalpara districts also felt the tremors.

Darrang, Tamulpur, Sonitpur, Kamrup, Biswanath, Udalguri, Nalbari, Bajali, Barpeta, Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Lakhimpur on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra also felt the tremors.

The earthquake was felt in parts of central-western Arunachal Pradesh, entire Meghalaya and various parts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and West Bengal.

The report showed that Middle East Bhutan, parts of China and Bangladesh were also shaken.

The tremors forced people to leave their homes to escape sleep.

The northeastern region is located in a high seismic zone, making the region prone to earthquakes.
