Former BJP leader and Assam Minister Nandita Gorlosa joined the Congress on Sunday, March 22, 2026, after she was denied a ticket to the single-phase Assam Assembly elections scheduled to be held on April 9, 2026.

His decision came soon after he submitted a formal resignation letter to Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia, resigning from his ministerial responsibilities and primary membership of the party with immediate effect.

In the letter, Ms. Gorlosa wrote: “I am writing to formally submit my resignation from primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with immediate effect.” He further said, “Considering the above, I request you to relieve me of my responsibilities with immediate effect. I appreciate the opportunities I have had to serve the people and the party and I would like to thank you for your support throughout my tenure.”

The Congress said Mr Langthasa agreed to step aside to accept Ms Gorlosa’s nomination from Haflong. The party said Ms Gorlosa will be declared as the Congress candidate from Haflong constituency.

Speaking about Ms. Gorlosa’s political career, Congress said: “For the last five years, she has been a strong voice for Dima Hasao and has consistently stood by her beliefs and principles even at personal and political cost.”

Criticizing Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Congress said: “Under the corrupt rule of Himanta Biswa Sarma, tribal interests were neglected with focus on transfer of land to big corporates.”
