Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, said that Assam Police had arrested Congress leader Pawan Khera.patatal To find out who gave him what were alleged to be forged documents defaming Mr. Sarma’s family.
In a press conference on Sunday, April 5, 2026, Mr. Khera had alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, an entrepreneur and wife of Assam CM, owns three foreign passports, undeclared luxury properties in Dubai and shell companies in the US.

After Ms. Sharma lodged a first information report (FIR) against Mr. Khera with the Assam police crime branch in Guwahati, an Assam police team descended on the Congress leader’s house in New Delhi to question him, but found that he was not at home. Reports indicate that Mr. Khera is in Congress-ruled Telangana, where the Assam police team will need permission from the local police to conduct an investigation.
“Ohssam Polis ko nahi jante hain… Pataal se bhi ukhar ke le ayega (They don’t know Assam Police…they will catch him even from the underworld),” Mr. Sarma told reporters in Sivasagar.
Both the CM and his wife rejected Mr Khera’s allegations as “fabricated” and threatened to sue the Congress leader within 48 hours; Mr. Sarma, however, claimed that the allegations were made with malicious intent to spoil the election atmosphere.
Congress wants ED and CBI probes
When asked about Mr Khera’s allegations at a press conference in Guwahati, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said: “They have already lodged an FIR against Khera. Let them investigate the matter. We will also face the case as the case progresses. We have initiated investigations by the authorities.” [Enforcement Directorate] ED or [Central Bureau of Investigation] CBI has been involved in the allegations.”

Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh also came to Mr Khera’s defense, saying the deployment of a “full army of police officers” to arrest his colleague “for asking fundamental questions in public interest” proved that the Assam CM was “disturbed, helpless and confused”.

Devices seized from Khera’s house
Assam Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Debajit Nath, with the help of Delhi police, led a team to search for Mr. Khera at his residence in Nizamuddin area. “The team could not find him at his house,” said a senior Assam police officer. However, electronic devices were seized during the search. The Assam police officer claimed that “incriminating” evidence was found.

On Monday, the Congress had petitioned the Election Commission to cancel Mr. Sarma’s candidature, alleging that he deliberately failed to mention his wife’s alleged offshore assets in his election manifesto. In the upcoming Assembly poll, the Assam CM is contesting the Jalukbari constituency, which he has held since the 2001 elections.
