Guwahati: An Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others were injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in Nagaland’s Chumoukedima district on Monday, officials said.

Officials in Kohima said an IED blast hit a vehicle, part of a convoy of Assam Rifles vehicles, near Sukhovi in Chumoukedima district on Monday afternoon.

According to officials, paramilitary personnel were traveling in a convoy in the area when the IED exploded, causing major damage to one of the vehicles.

Security forces launched a large-scale search operation in and around the region to catch those responsible for the attack. As part of the operation, reinforcement security officers were dispatched to the region and the entire area was cordoned off.
Authorities said they were examining whether the explosive device was placed on the roadside and detonated remotely. On July 6, two Assam Rifles personnel were killed when suspected Naga armed militants ambushed an Assam Rifles vehicle at Nungshang Kong along the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway (NH-2) in Ukhrul district of neighboring Manipur.

The National Socialist Council of Nagalim-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) denied any involvement in the Manipur ambush and maintained that it remained committed to the ceasefire agreement signed with the Central government and the ongoing Indo-Naga peace process.

In its statement following the July 6 attack, NSCN-IM categorically said that it was “not involved in the incident in question and has no knowledge of it.”
