Assam villagers refuse burial for slain youth accused of killing teen, injuring girl

GUWAHATI

Five Muslim villages denied the funeral of a teenager who was shot by police after he attacked and killed a Grade 12 girl and her cousin on Monday, June 1, 2026.

The last rites of Ashik Ali alias Roz were performed at a relative’s cemetery on the evening of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, after locals refused her burial at the public cemetery used by five villages.

Roz was accused of stalking the girl and pressuring her parents to marry her despite their rejection. Allegedly, he attacked the 18-year-old girl and her 19-year-old cousin Madhurjya Barman with a sharp weapon while returning from Nalbari town on Sunday evening.

The incident took place about 300 meters away from the girl’s house in Gangapur of Mukalmua town of Nalbari district. While Madhurjya, the local leader of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), died on the spot, the girl was admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in a serious condition.

Mukalmua is a little more than 50 km west of Guwahati.

GMCH Superintendent Devajit Choudhury told reporters that he was showing signs of recovery. “We are treating his multiple injuries, but he will need counseling to recover from the trauma,” he said.

Nalbari Superintendent of Police Bibekananda Das said that the accused hid after attacking the two youths. Police tracked him to a beach near Mukalmua.

“After his arrest, he was taking our team to the place where he hid the murder weapon. He suddenly snatched the self-loading rifle from the hand of one of our men and fired four times. He was killed in retaliatory fire, and one of our men was injured,” he said.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s Nalbari MLA Jayanta Mallabaruah and AASU’s chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya visited Madhurjya’s house on Tuesday, June 2.

“Madhurjya was the only hope and support of her family. Her untimely death left an irreplaceable void. I expressed my deepest condolences and assured the family of all possible support during this difficult time,” the MLA said.

Mr Bhattacharya said Madhurjya’s death was a “personal loss” for the students’ union.

Meanwhile, in eastern Assam’s Majuli district, police arrested four boys and two boys for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl multiple times. Police said the girl was found to be six months pregnant.

“After the pregnancy was revealed recently, her family filed a complaint. Medical examinations showed that the girl was 11 years old when the accused started abusing her. She turned 12 about four months ago,” said a police officer.
