India-Bhutan Rail Connectivity Expanded With Rs 4,033 Crore Investment; Trade And Travel To Get Boost | India News

India Butan Railway: On Monday, September 29, 2025, India announced two new railway connections with a total of 89 km. The Kokrajhar-Belphu in Assam and Banarhat-Samtse projects in Western Bengal will be implemented at a cost of 4,033 RS. These are the first railway connection projects between the two countries and are an important step in strengthening binary bonds.
The announcement was made by Foreign Minister Vikram Misri at a joint press conference in Delhi with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Misri described the attempt as a “a big new step” to improve the railway connection and to encourage closer cooperation between India and Bue.
These projects were initially agreed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bhutan in March 2024. For the projects, the official memorandum was signed last year and an official agreement was signed on September 29 with the visit of the Bhutan Foreign Minister’s new Delhi visit.

Misri strong emphasizes India-Bhutan relations
Speaking about the initiative, Misri emphasized the depth of the relationship between India and Bhutan. “India and Butan share the relationship between extraordinary trust, mutual respect and understanding. Cultural and civilization bonds are due to strong human-human relations and shared developmental and safety interests.”
Misri also noted close participation at the highest leadership levels. “Majesty, Bhutan King and Bhutan Prime Minister regularly visit India. His Majesty has previously joined Mahakumbh, and the Prime Minister recently joined the Bhutan temple in Rajgir.”

Infrastructure partnership is expanding
Misri pointed out that India is the largest developmental provider for Bhutan. For Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2024-2029), India supported project assistance, high-effective community development, economic incentive programs and program grants with 10,000 RS support. This amount represents a 100% increase compared to the previous five -year plan.
According to reports, new railway connections are expected to increase trade, travel and connection between India and Bhutan, and at the same time strengthening economic and cultural ties. Authorities believe that projects will improve access to remote areas and support Bhutan’s overall development.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Foreign Minister Misri addressed the press conference and emphasized the strong partnership and common vision of India and Bhutan for regional connection and development.
