After Russia’s attack in Ukraine, a NATO country had to mix two warplanes. After Russian unmanned aerial vehicles were launched into Odessa, Ukraine on Friday night, two F-16 warplanes from Romania took off.

In the statement made by the Romanian Ministry of Defense, “Two F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets were launched from the 86th Air Base on the night of 21-22 November to monitor the weather conditions on the Ukrainian border within the scope of the attacks carried out by the Russian Federation near the river border with Romania.”

At around 01.30 on Saturday, an alarm was given to the Tulcea region in the far eastern region of Romania, on the border with Ukraine.

It was determined that no UAVs entered Romanian airspace, and about two hours later the warplanes returned to the base in Borcea.

The statement said: “We are in constant contact with our allies, sharing operational information in real time and acting decisively to guarantee the security of Romania and NATO’s eastern flank.”

The jets come at a time of tension between the two countries, as just three days ago a Russian drone flew some 8km into Romanian territory during a night attack on Ukraine.

Russia has recently increased its attacks on its neighbor’s southern and eastern regions. On 22 November, Russia reportedly launched an Iksander-M ballistic missile and 104 drone strikes, of which air defenses shot down 89.
