At least eight dead, 15 hurt in Nagaland landslide

Landslides that occurred in at least 11 places in Nagaland’s Mon town, triggered by incessant heavy rains on Sunday morning, July 19, 2026, killed eight people and injured 15 others.

The town, the center of the Mon region on the border with Myanmar, is located approximately 300 km northeast of the state’s capital, Kohima.

Officials of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) said that many areas of the rain-ravaged Mon district were cut off and communication networks were disrupted. Many areas of the adjacent Longleng and Mokokchung districts were also affected, but no human casualties were reported there.

Four bodies were found

Mon Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak said the landslides occurred around 6 a.m. and killed eight people at one location.

“We have so far retrieved four bodies — three females and a male — from the disaster site. Twelve houses were damaged at the site,” he said, adding that houses were also damaged in 10 other locations in the town, prompting the district administration to relocate the residents to safer places.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio mourned the deaths and said the State government was monitoring the situation closely. The government announced ex-gratia assistance of ₹ 4 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and ₹ 74,000 to each of the injured.

He added that NSDMA, District Disaster Management Authority, State Disaster Response Force, district administration, police, Assam Rifles and local people participated in the search and rescue operations.

‘Ensure communication access’

S. Phangnon Konyak, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Rajya Sabha member from Monday, said incessant rains and torrential rain have caused widespread destruction in various areas. He requested network service providers and responsible authorities to ensure continuous access to mobile and internet connectivity on Monday to avoid disruption of rescue operations, distress calls, alerts and information flow.

Apart from Mon district, Tuli subdivision in Mokokchung district and other affected areas were severely affected; landslides, flash floods, road closures, and damage to public infrastructure and private property.

The government said it would provide relief assistance, including food, temporary shelter, basic needs and other support, to all affected families in areas hit by rain and landslides.

The government has also instructed all relevant departments to remain on high alert and ensure uninterrupted coordination for timely response, restoration of connectivity and rehabilitation of affected communities.

Heavy rains also caused landslides in Guwahati’s Kharghuli district around 10 am on Sunday. A homestay’s retaining wall collapsed, damaging at least six two-wheelers parked downhill, officials said. No one was injured in the incident.
