Atlantic staff writer Elaine Godfrey reported that she was “kicked out” of a rally for Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, because, according to Crockett’s staff, she was a “world-class hater.”

“Just before armed guards escorted me from the rally and dropped me off on the side of a road leading into a Texas county, I was informed that I would no longer be welcome at an event I had previously attended.” Godfrey wrote on Thursday.

He said he spent an hour at a Lubbock rally for Crockett’s Senate campaign, then was approached by a woman with a badge as soon as he joined other reporters.

“‘Are you Elaine?’ he asked. I recognized him from where he introduced himself at the entrance of the event as he pointed me towards the press area of the building. Yes, I answered. ‘His team asked you to leave,’ he said. When I asked why, the staff member looked at her phone and dutifully read: ‘They just said: ‘Elaine from the Atlantic, a white girl with a hat and a notepad.’ He interviews people in the crowd. He is a top-notch hater and will return. He needs to go,” Godfrey wrote.

Godfrey was a staff writer behind a profile piece for Crockett in July and received backlash after the Texas representative reportedly included comments from his fellow House Democrats “without telling him first.”

“He told me he would ‘close the profile and revoke all permissions,'” Godfrey wrote at the time.

The piece was still published and included comments from other Democratic figures.

According to Godfrey, Crockett said there was “no evidence” that a reporter was removed from his rally, but claimed it was a “certain journalist” who “didn’t have a history of being truthful” and had previously lost a lawsuit against Crockett.

“Maybe he was thinking of someone else because this wasn’t something that had ever happened to me,” Godfrey wrote.

Godfrey added that it was no surprise that Crockett was removed from the rally given his fiery style of politics, but he did express concerns about how he was treated.

“As security guards began to appear around me, I wondered to myself what separated an A-list hater from a middling one. I agreed to leave, and four guards, at least one of whom was armed, escorted me out of the building, into the parking lot, and onto the side of the nearby highway, where they waited while I ordered a ride,” Godfrey wrote.
